Former Supreme Court Judge Justice S. Rathinavel Pandian received the V.R. Krishna Iyer award in Chennai on Saturday. The award was instituted by the Society for Community Organisation Trust (SOCO). It honours outstanding legal workers and human rights activists.

Justice Pandian expressed joy in receiving an award named after his icon. As a judge of the Supreme Court, I followed his valuable advice on how a judge should muster courage to deliver a judgement based on the facts and law without fear or favour... I believe what Krishna Iyer said once, Law without politics is blind. Politics without law is deaf`... Politics and law should coexist together. While Krishna Iyer was practising as a lawyer in Thalassery in the erstwhile Malabar region of Kerala, he was also a social activist and politician. This helped him get a wide knowledge of people suffering from miserable living conditions. As a judge, he brought in those experiences in many of his landmark judgements later, he said.
