From today, the vegetable section of Koyambedu wholesale market to reopen

Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai was identified as Coronavirus cluster and has been closed since the month of May.  From Monday, 28th September 2020, the vegetable section of this market would re-open for business. To clean the shops and set up things, the vendors have been allowed inside this market from yesterday evening.

Information is repair works have been undertaken at this market complex during the break and stringent steps have been insisted to prevent another pandemic outbreak. The individual customers would not be allowed to enter this market for the sake of preventing overcrowding. Point is that the minimum purchase quantity has been fixed at 50kgs. It is now said that the guidelines and restrictions have led to mixed reactions from the vendors.

This vegetable market was shifted to Thirumazhisai for some time and at that time many works like raising platforms, painting the shops, redoing the drainage system, repairing bathrooms and relaying roads were completed. It was later mentioned by Mr. Rajasekaran, president of Koyambedu Peria Market Association that around 2000 vendors would be returning back to the market.

He added that for the purpose of safety of both vendors as well as the customers, it was necessary to keep infrared thermometers plus pulse oxymeters and hand sanitizers at the shops. It must be noted that there would not be any sales for quantity less than 50kgs in the market. Wholesale purchasers would be given importance now. Passes would be issued to the shop owners, staff and truck drivers of this market and they must show their passes to enter the market complex.

For cleaning and sanitizing purposes, the Koyambedu market would be shut down on Fridays and the sales timings would be between 1am and 9am. The treasurer of Koyambedu wholesale Market Merchants Association Mr. Sukumaran pointed out that the sales would stop at 1pm but there would be entry in the evening for stock and accounts purposes.

Inside the market, a health camp would be set up and temperature and oxygen level would be checked. For sake of taking the persons to the hospitals, arrangements would be there in the market
