Reducing carbon footprint is very important and for this as many as 100 TN state run schools would receive Rs 20 lakhs each to take up measures. An amount of Rs 20 cr in total has been allotted by the Dept of Environment, Climate Change and Forest to implement the Green School programme for 2024-25 academic year. Information is that out of these 100 schools 3 schools are from Chennai.
In the Assembly during the budget session for 2024-25, the minister for environment, climate change and forest made an announcement. The allocation of the funds has been made based on this.
It was brought to light by a notification from the department that the TNPCB or Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board would provide funds for the implementation of Green School Programme in 100 schools in TN. The Commissioner of School Education would implement this programme.
To increase the green cover in the premises, the schools would install solar panels and drip irrigation facilities plus plant saplings etc. This was as per the notification.
It is noteworthy that in Chennai 3 schools that have been selected for this Green School programme are Govt higher Secondary School, Sholinganallur, Govt Higher Secondary School, MMDA, Arumbakkam and Pathipaga Chemmal K. Ganapathy Govt Higher Secondary School, Kodambakkam.
