Chennai sweltered under extreme heat for the third day in a row, with temperatures reaching 100°F at Nungambakkam and 102.5°F at Meenambakkam on Tuesday. The weather department forecasts a 2-4°C rise in temperatures across northern coastal and interior Tamil Nadu due to shifting wind patterns.
Madurai reported the highest temperature in the state at 41°C (105.8°F), followed by Erode at 39.6°C (103.2°F). Fifteen weather stations in Tamil Nadu recorded temperatures exceeding 100°F. The hot and uncomfortable weather is expected to continue for the next two days, particularly in Chennai and surrounding areas.
Weatherman Pradeep John highlighted that Meenambakkam matched its September heat record of 39.2°C, previously set in 2002 and 2004.
The meteorological department has advised fishermen to stay out of the sea until September 21 due to expected squally weather and strong winds over the Gulf of Mannar and southern Tamil Nadu. Some areas in the state may see light to moderate rain over the weekend.
