Chennai residents traveling in their own vehicles for the Pongal festival have been urged to use bypass roads to avoid city congestion. With lakhs of people leaving the city by bus, train, and car, additional government and city link buses are operating from terminals such as Kilampakkam, Koyambedu, and Madhavaram.
To ease traffic flow, Chennai Police advises travelers to avoid the GST Road via Tambaram and Perungalathur. Instead, motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes such as the OMR (Thiruporur-Chengalpattu) or the Vandalur Outer Ring Road.
This recommendation comes amid heavy traffic jams near Perungalathur due to ongoing railway bridge work. Travelers are also advised to avoid exiting the city via the Maduravoyal Bypass.
