The Tamil Nadu government will submit Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for three Chennai Metro Rail corridors Airport to Kilambakkam, Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Avadi, and Poonamallee to Sunkuvarchatram via Sriperumbudur to the Union government for equity contribution, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu announced in the Assembly.
Metro Expansion Plans:
- Airport to Kilambakkam (15.46 km) – ₹9,335 crore
- Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Avadi (21.76 km) – ₹9,744 crore
- Poonamallee to Sunkuvarchatram via Sriperumbudur (27.9 km) – ₹8,779 crore
Additionally, DPRs will be prepared for two new metro corridors:
- Tambaram to Velachery via Guindy (21 km)
- Light House to High Court (6 km)
RRTS and Metro Plans for Other Cities
The government will explore a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) on three key routes:
- Chennai - Chengalpattu - Tindivanam - Villupuram (167 km)
- Chennai - Kanchipuram - Vellore (140 km)
- Coimbatore - Tiruppur - Erode - Salem (185 km)
Metro Rail DPRs will also be submitted for Coimbatore (₹10,740 crore) and Madurai (₹11,368 crore) to the Union government.
Upcoming Developments
- The ₹63,246-crore Phase II Chennai Metro project is progressing, with the Poonamallee to Porur corridor set to open in December 2025.
- Feasibility studies for ropeways in Mamallapuram, Udhagamandalam, and Kodaikanal are planned to boost tourism while preserving the environment.
