Important information about roof makeover at 200 bus shelters in Chennai!!

The shocking disclosure that came from the survey conducted by CUMTA was about the presence of 200 bus stands without any roofs in Chennai.

Under the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation, there are 2000 bus stops and 200 bus shelters on major bus routes are without roofs. Mayor R. Priya made it clear yesterday that these 200 bus shelters would get roofing make-over at a cost of Rs 34 crores.

Information is that bus shelters present in places like Ekkatuthangal, Guindy and West Saidapet etc would get a makeover with tensile roofs at an cost of Rs 4.47 cr. At an amount of Rs 16 cr, 4 bus terminals present in places like Manali, IOCL, Tollgate and Saligramam would be upgraded. This would decongest the traffic and aid in easy bus movements.

It is worthy to note that the majority of bus shelters would come up in north Chennai that has a huge labour population.

An amount of Rs 22.25 cr has been allotted for plastic baling centres I 10 new zones in Chennai. The plastic waste would be compressed enabling easy transport and recycling. It was brought out that the new centres would come up in localities such as Tiruvottriyur, Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar and Sholinganallur etc.

The financial report has been presented by Sarbhajya Das who is the chairperson of the Standing Committee (Taxation and Finance). Point is that the project revenue for the fiscal year 2025-26 is Rs 5145.52 cr and the expenditure has been projected to be Rs 5241.09 cr. It is learnt that the revenue from the capital would likely be Rs 3121.65 cr with expenditure of Rs 3190.61 cr.
