There is a plan to commence flight services in 45 cities across the country including 3 cities in the state of Tamil Nadu. The flight fare has been fixed at Rs. 2500.
The central government announced the launching of the project named Udaan last October intending to encourage domestic air travel and also to facilitate the common public to afford air travel with lower fares.
As per project Udaan, 45 new airports are being constructed in 45 cities throughout India, including Salem, Neyveli and Hosur in Tamil Nadu.
These new airports will be linked to the main airports like Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, and Vizag and will be operated with 128 domestic routes. A contract has been signed with 5 airline service companies to join in this project and offer their services.
As per project Udaan, a flight fare of Rs. 2500 has been fixed for flights of 1-hour duration for 50 percent seats in each flight.
Under this scheme, flight services are set to commence in the following routes: From Salem to Chennai, Bengaluru, and Puducherry, from Neyveli to Chennai, from Hosur to Chennai, from Puducherry to Hyderabad, Chennai, and Salem.
Approval has been obtained for setting up new airports in Salem, Neyveli, and Puducherry. However, approval is still awaited for setting up a new airport in Hosur.
