The state government of Tamil Nadu is planning to introduce free medical insurance cover for all the students studying in government and government-aided schools.
There are 57000 schools in Tamil Nadu. Out of these, there are 37000 government schools and 8402 government-aided schools.
86 lakhs students are studying in these schools. Students residing near the school attend by walking or cycling to the school. The students who reside away from the school, attend schools taking transports like bus, trains.
Most of these students come from the economically weaker sections of the society.
If these students get involved in accidents, the parents cannot afford the medical treatment expenses. Keeping this viewpoint, the state government of Tamil Nadu has come up with a plan to offer free medical insurance cover for these students.
Accordingly, a committee comprising of the secretary of the school education department Mr. Udhayachandran and other officials is set to introduce this scheme.
The students studying from 1st standard to +2 will get the free medical insurance cover.
In order that the students get the medical treatment absolutely free, the state government of Tamil Nadu will pay the premium of the medical insurance.
The education department circles inform that more details will be announced during the budget subsidy presentation in the legislative assembly.
