Soon, the difficulties of the residents regarding unnecessary waiting at the railway level crossing leading to and traffic congestion etc in the Royapuram zone would come to an end. Thanks to the efforts of GCC.
On 1st of July 2022, the subway work was started by Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC in Bojaraja Nagar near Kannan Street, in north Chennai in the Royapuram zone.
Now, nearly 3 years have gone and after repeated delays, GCC has mentioned that this limited use subway or LUS would be opened in another 3 months. An amount of Rs 13.41 cr is being spent on this subway work. Initially, the deadline was July 2024 but was extended due to delays.
It is worth noting that the prolonged stopping of trains at the railway level crossing, especially goods trains for up to 2 to 3 hours, results in heavy traffic congestion here and this has been causing huge inconvenience for many. An advocate named Mr. Mohammad Aadhif has filed public interest litigation in the High Court in Madras recently.
The petition from him explained the above mentioned issue of prolonged stopping of goods trains at railway level crossing and its consequences. The petition added that the railway level crossing was the only access point for about 6000 residents here and delays hindered emergency services forcing the residents to take risks.
On 6th March 2025, a counter affidavit was filed and Chennai Corporation Commissioner Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran mentioned that the construction work was delayed because of the shifting of underground utilities of CMWSSB or Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, IOCL or Indian Oil Corporation Limited and TN Generation and Distribution Corporation and monsoon rains etc.
Out of the total length of 90m, so far 45m have been completed and this was mentioned by Mr. G. Kumaragurubaran. In another 3 months, the remaining portion of the work would be completed and would be opened for the public use.
