GCC to Introduce Smart Parking System at Marina Beach

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to implement a smart parking system along Marina Beach to regulate parking fees and improve revenue collection. The new system will charge vehicle owners based on the duration of parking on the service road, similar to commercial complexes.

A feasibility study conducted by a private firm suggested that this system could double revenue while ensuring transparency and preventing unauthorized parking. Under the new model, smart meters will be installed at five entry points from Marina swimming pool to the Lighthouse.

How It Works:

- Entry: Vehicles must collect a sensor card upon entering the parking zone.

- Exit: The card will be scanned at the exit, and the fee will be calculated based on the duration of the stay.

- Separate Parking Zones: Designated spaces for motorcycles and cars will be allocated.

The project is expected to be operational by the end of July, and based on its success, the system may be expanded to other beaches in Chennai.
