There is an important demand now from the residents belonging to Chennai regarding ration shop buildings.
The news is that the residents from various GCC zones in the city have been demanding new buildings with waiting halls and toilet facilities etc for the ration shops.
It must be noted that the councillors who flagged the issue of absence of modern infrastructure for PDS shops or Public Distribution Shops have called for the construction of new shop buildings on the GCC land.
It was later brought out by Fathima Ahmed, councillor of ward 61 Egmore that GCC officers in zone 5 Royapuram zone had not identified spaces to construct PDS shops in Boopathy Nagar near Casa Major Road. Point is that the residents have demanded new buildings for the PDS shop but the GCC officers have delayed the identification of land for the shop construction. The councillor mentioned that one and half months have gone since the demand for suitable land for the ration shop.
The GCC officials have been asked by the councillors (who have demanded lands for PDS shops) to coordinate with other departments to construct large modern buildings. From the rented buildings in Chennai, many PDS shops have been operating.
In Mugalivakkam, most of the PDS shops have been functioning from the buildings that were less than 200 sq ft area. This area would not be enough to construct waiting halls and toilets etc. It is shocking to mention that the residents wait on the roads during the rains and under the scorching sun near the PDS shops.
The residents from Mogappair west demanded toilets and drinking water facilities at the PDS shops as they would have to wait for long hours near the shop.
