The Tamil Nadu Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has approved the distribution of pattas to over 86,000 residents living in non-objectionable (belt) areas across urban regions, including Chennai. Of these, 29,187 beneficiaries are in Chennai, while around 57,000 are from other cities like Madurai. Revenue Minister KKSSR Ramachandran stated that pattas would be issued to those residing in areas other than water body poramboke, graveyards, and court-restricted zones.
The government will release guidelines within a week, and the Chief Minister has set a six-month deadline to complete the distribution process. Two committees will be formed to oversee the execution one at the district level and another headed by the Chief Secretary. Pattas will be issued at district collectorates, and if public turnout is high, special camps will be organized to ensure a smooth process.
The state has already distributed pattas to 10 lakh people over the past four years, and the Chief Minister has set a new target of six lakh more. The Cabinet has also approved relaxing a 1962 law that previously restricted patta distribution to residents on encroached lands, facilitating this large-scale initiative.
