Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has inaugurated Chennai’s first wetland sponge park on OSR land near Mount Poonamallee High Road, Porur. Unlike Pallikaranai, this park allows visitors to explore the wetland and learn about its ecosystem. Entry is currently free until CMDA finalizes an agency for maintenance.

Previously a parking lot, the 16.63-acre OSR land of Sri Ramachandra University has been transformed into a thriving wetland, boosting biodiversity. The CMDA is conducting a GIS survey to identify more marshy lands for similar projects across Chennai.

These wetland parks will enhance groundwater recharge, improve water storage, and help mitigate urban flooding. The Porur wetland sponge park, once part of the Porur lake, serves as a flood buffer, stormwater purifier, and biodiversity hotspot. Designed with eco-friendly boardwalks and viewing decks, the park promotes environmental awareness while offering a unique natural experience.
