A recent study conducted by Madras University under the leadership of R Thilgaraj, Head Department of Criminology indicates s that Chennai plays role in women trafficking. The study was conducted on 1500 victims.  More than 25 of the victims reported that they were pushed into brothels during their adolescence. Many other had been kidnapped and sold during their child hood. The study project was funded UNDP under the auspices of  Tamilnadu State Aids control society and conducted.

The study results indicate clearly that there is gender bias in our society and there is child abuse. Importantly  close to 50% were victims of sex exploitation. The study was conducted in 2009.
