Chennai residents will have the facility to apply for passport from the Post Office from July onwards.
The Regional Passport Offices and the Postal Department have joined to introduce this service. They are working out on the modalities to implement the same.
A senior official from the Postal Department informed:
The passport applicants can obtain the passport application forms from the post office. They can fill up the same and submit in the post office itself. The Post Office will register the application and furnish the details online.
The applicants will have to provide proof og age, proof of residence, etc.
The post office employees have been trained to help the applicants on the details of how to fill it.
A receipt will be given once the application for passport is submitted. The date for the interview at the passport will be recorded on this receipt.
In the 1st stage, this facility is being introduced in 25 post offices in Chennai, Vellore, and Pondicherry.
It is planned that this facility will be introduced at 10 Post Offices in Chennai in the first phase. Gradually, it will be introduced in more post offices.
Charges
Rs. 100/- will have to be paid at the Post Office for application of passport. This is in order for the usage of online facility. The payment can be made online as well. Otherwise, it can be paid through State Bank of India.
The Post Office employees will only help in filling the application & registering online. Other processes like checking, etc will not be done by the Post Office.
The Postal Department has requested for a special name for the software used and the related IT technology.
