Over 3500 automatic timers are installed by the Chennai corporation. These will be used for turning on and off the streetlights in the city between 6 pm and 5.30 am. This move is made at an expense of Rs 5 crore by the Chennai city corporation.

Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy says all streetlights in the city will soon be operated with automatic timers. There was an inclination towards the electricity department of civic body during this fiscal budget. Rs 150 crore was allotted to the department which is a 50% increase compared to last year. CFL bulbs will be used so as to save energy as these will consume lesser energy compared to LED (light emitting diode) bulbs. Nearly 6000 LED bulbs are to be installed before end of 2015. Though the cost of installation of these bulbs will be higher, these can largely help in cutting down on electricity consumption. They have also got longer life span, emit brighter light and lesser heat. They also don`t have mercury content.
