The risk of meeting with accident while driving a bike or car is too high during monsoon season. Well, it is not practically possible for us to control the monsoon rain, but we certainly can control the possibilities of accident by taking extra care toward the car.

Here are few quick tips on how to maintain your car so that you can prevent avoidable accidents during the rainy season.

What makes a car ride risky during monsoon?

·         Poor visibility
·         Slippery roads
·         Presence of potholes
·         Waterlogging
·         Muddy tyres due to water stagnation that causes corrosion
·         Loss of braking efficiency due to water seepage into brake disk, drum, etc

Car Maintenance:

Here is a list of most important parts that are to be given special attention during monsoon season:

·         Tyre
·         Wipers and washers
·         Brakes
·         Body of the car
·         Electricals
·         Interiors

Tips for Car Tyres:

Make sure to have the car tyre in good condition before the onset of monsoon. There should be enough tread depth so that it doesn`t skid over slippery surfaces. Tread depth should not be lesser than 2mm. When brought in contact with water, rubber tends to soften. Hence, keep checking tyre pressure at regular time intervals and keep it inflated as per manufacturer recommendations. This will not just ensure smooth drive during monsoon, but is a good step for the overall tyre life as well.

Tips for Car Wipers:

Wiper blades tend to wear out so fast. The rubber strips on these blades turn useless within a year. Hence it is recommended to be changed annually before the onset of monsoon. Make sure that the rubber is not hard and has no cracks on it as it will scratch the windscreen.

Further, check if the wiper is working properly at all three speeds. Fill up the washer bottle. You may choose to add mild detergent to it which will be of help in keeping the windshield glass clean and free from oil.

Tips for Brakes:

Brake calipers are most crucial to be checked in your car. Keep checking it often and get them replaced or cleaned as per its condition so that they are maintained free from dirt. Brakes should not be too tight or too loose as well. Water is likely to wet the brake drum and reduce its efficiency and hence you should keep using your brakes often. To dry out the brake, place your left foot on brake pedal and move the throttle using the right foot. Practice this immediately after wading through water will help in making sure that the brake drum has not got stuck.

Tips for Body of the Car

Rainwater is quite acidic. This can damage the body of the car if exposed to rain for extended period. Hence, give it a nice wax polish well before the monsoon season. In addition to protecting the paint, the wax will also help in rolling off water with ease. It is also necessary to grease all doors. Use anti-moisture spray for preventing rusting on exposed metal parts. Spray like WD40, Zorric, Rusklick, etc may be used.
