Since there is decrease in the demand of power in Tamil Nadu, 630 megawatt production in the three units of Thoothukudi thermal plant has been stopped.

There are winds in Tamil Nadu due to south west monsoon. Because of this the power production from the windmill has increased. Moreover because of the rains and cool breeze, the usage of electricity has come down.

In view of the above there is more production of power than the demand in Tamil Nadu. Hence 630 megawatt production in the three units of Thoothukudi thermal plant has been stopped.

The fourth unit of Thoothukudi thermal plant was stopped for maintenance on 5th at 1.08 am.  The maintenance work in this unit was completed and was ready for power production day before yesterday. Since there is less demand for power in Tamil Nadu, the government ordered to stop the production in the fourth unit. Similarly the government requested to stop production in the first unit. Power production was stopped in this unit day before yesterday at 9.16 am. The administration has decided to carry out the maintenance work in this unit for thirteen days.

At this juncture, the third unit was also stopped. Officials mentioned that maintenance works will be carried out in this unit also.

As far as Thoothukudi thermal plant is concerned 1050 megawatt power is being produced in the five units.  650 megawatt power production has been affected because three units have been stopped. Only 2nd and 5th units are functioning now.
