In order to abolish black money, Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonetized the 500 and 1000 rupee notes. Because of this Rs 14 Lakhs Crores was deposited in the banks. The Reserve Bank of India was not able to print currencies in lieu of this money. Hence the people have to stand in long queues to withdraw cash from ATMs. At the same time, the Centre has decided not to print currencies equivalent to the deposited money.

In view of this, the central government is urging everyone to go for cashless transactions. In order to encourage this, the government is giving incentives and bumper prices.

At this juncture, in yet another major push towards Digital India, the Indian Railways announced a 0.5 per cent discount on season tickets, if the payment is made using debit or credit cards.

This will become effective from 1st January.
