Soon, road railer project to turn a reality

In spite of having crossed one and a half years after the Indian Railways gave its nod for India’s maiden road railer multi-modal project linking Chennai and Delhi, the approval by the Ministry of Road Transport is still awaited.

Under this project, the roadways and railways are seamlessly connected with trailers that run on road as well as railway tracks. We call it road railers. Kirloskar Pneumatic Company Ltd has bought this from Nasik.

Officials state that the road railer units and bogies are manufactured and made available at Arakkonam.

There are 50 road railer units under a single railer rake. Each of these is capable of carrying loads up to 20 tonnes. The consignments can be loaded to the individual trailer units and attached to lorry at the consignor’s end. Officials say that the road railer unit attachment with bogies and transporting from there shall take place from Melpakkam railway yard. While unloading, the road railer is carefully removed and connected with the lorry mover. This is then sent to the customer.

Approvals from all the other ends are received. The bogie and wagons are kept ready. This concept is already in practice in the USA and other European nations. This cuts down on the time taken for delivering consignments. There is no need to load or unload goods as we directly connect the road railer unit and bogie.
