As a part of the tomatoes harvested from the states of Andhra and Karnataka are now being sent to the Northern States of India, the quantity of tomatoes arriving at the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market has reduced considerably.

Because of the shortage, the tomato price has gone up to Rs. 60 per kg.

Generally, the quantity of tomatoes arriving from the states of Andhra and Karnataka is considerably higher than the tomatoes arriving from the other districts in Tamil Nadu. With the reduction in arrival from the 2 states, tomato which was sold at Rs. 45 per kg last week, is now sold at Rs, 50 per kg.

The president of the Koyambedu tomato traders association explained that it is currently raining heavily in the northern states. So, only lesser quantity of vegetables is grown in the northern states. So, they have to buy from other states. As the states of Karnataka and Andhra are the leading producers of tomato, the vegetable traders from Northern states buy from these 2 states.
