After an inordinate delay, the location of the site for the construction of the Sholinganallur Taluk Office has been finalized.
The corporation officials have conveyed the approval and the news is gathered that the construction activities will commence soon.
During the year 2008, certain sections of the Tambaram Taluk were removed and then new Taluks of Alandur and Sholinganallur were set up. Out of the 2 new Taluks, 23 villages including Medavakkam, Madippakkam, Sholinganallur, and Semmancherry were included in the Sholinganallur Taluk.
The Taluk office issues some important documents including heirdom, income certificate, etc. In the office of the special exclusive Taluk office, the financial assistance approval letters for the senior citizens, widows’ assistance funds, etc., are also issued.
Apart from the records brought from the Tambaram Taluk, the newly made and received documents are also maintained in this new office. As there is no space for keeping the increasing number of documents, they have been stacked one upon another.
Further, as the petitions received from the public during the grievance address camps conducted every Friday are also kept here, there is an unmanageable pile of documents which the officers and staff find it difficult to maintain and trace.
Consequently, the demand for construction of an exclusive Taluk Office was brought up. Immediately a site was located in the Medavakkam-Sholinganallur Road near a private college was explored but given up as the Forest Department refused permission.
Subsequently, another site was located in the Nedunchezhiyan street near the Mango Grove was explored but was given up later due to the excess time delay in obtaining the ‘No objection’ certificate from the corporation. The 3rd site was located in Narayanaswamy Nagar but as there was some dispute with the owner, a case was filed in the High Court. This is pending. Thus, there was an inordinate time delay in the process of selecting various sites for the construction of the Sholinganallur Taluk Office and rejecting them one-after-another.
Because of this time delay, thousands of documents are maintained in the present cramped space and the public had to undergo the ordeal of waiting to get the required documents traced and the certificates to be issued.
Now, the Corporation officials have given the final location letter in the Nedunchezhiyan Street the mango grove and this letter has been sent to the Southern region Joint Commissioner’s Office in Adyar for scrutiny.
So, it is now expected that the construction of the new Sholinganallur Taluk Office will commence shortly in Nedunchezhiyan Street.
As the present office is functioning in a severely restricted space of 1200 sq ft, the officers and the staff face hardship in maintaining/tracing the pile of documents.
The officials should not stop with the clearance order for construction – they should commence the construction activities immediately. Then only, the accumulated pending grievances and applications can be attended.
The approval letter from the South region Joint Commissioner is awaited. Once this is received, the recommendation letter to PWD officials to commence construction would be sent within a day.
As an official government order has been issued in 2012 for the construction of a new Taluk Office, and funds of Rs. 2.67 Crores have been allotted, there will be no financial issues n commencing construction.
The maps of the newly selected site in Nedunchezhiyan Street were received only recently. Hence, this has been forwarded for scrutiny by the Joint Commissioner’s Office.
