How would you react when you come across the news that in the month of May the highest temperature recorded was just 39 degree Celsius and it was the hottest day in the whole month? Shocking and surprising isn’t it!!
Yesterday, 29th May 2018, was the hottest day in the Chennai city in this summer season and it is now said that if the temperature does not touch 40 Celsius in the forthcoming 2 days then this would be the first time since the year 2004 when temperatures not touched 40 Celsius. On Wednesday, that is today, it is expected that the temperatures would touch 40 Celsius in the Chennai city also similar to the temperature of 40 Celsius in Meenambakkam on Tuesday.
The good news is the day weather in Chennai in the month of June would not be unbearably hot like in the previous years. This was confirmed by few officials belonging to meteorological department.
Tuesday in Chennai was said to be the coolest in the last 10 years with the average maximum temperature at 36.02 degree Celsius. It was back in the year 2008 the average maximum temperature touched the same level and it was 39.77 Celsius.
One important point to note here is last year in 2017 the average maximum temperature reached in May month was 37.58 Celsius for over 10 days. In this month of May in 2018 there were many days with average maximum temperature less than 36.02 Celsius. The main reason cited for drop in the temperatures in 2018 was due to persistent sea breeze that was present till 25th of May.
Weather blogger Mr. Pradeep John spoke about how north-westerly winds were responsible for the warm land breeze and this resulted in raise in the temperatures. He then highlighted that for another 3 more days the north-westerly winds would be present. In the month of June, the temperatures would be 0.5 degree Celsius below the usual temperatures and this was as per the IMD or Indian Meteorological Department forecast.
It was in the May 2012, Chennai city did not have any rainfall and now in the year 2018 this May month did not have any rainfall.
