An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale rocked the North Eastern States and its adjoining Bangladesh on Saturday at 7.01 am for five seconds. Though there was no casualty the intensity of the quake was felt for five seconds, according to an official of the Seismological Centre.
The northern states comprising Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur are considered the sixth major earthquake-prone belt area in the world.
More than 1500 people died in an earthquake incident that took place in the year 1897.
