The Italian government surprised its Indian counterpart by refusing to let the Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen return to India.
The marines, Massimiliano Lattore and Salvatore Girone, allegedly killed two fishermen off the coast of Kerala in an anti-piracy operation. They were told to stay in the country till the trial was over. In December last year when they were allowed to visit their families, they returned as soon as their leave expired. Similarly, they were allowed to return home for 4 weeks to vote in Italy’s general election. But they will not return to India.
The Italian government has said that they are ‘open’ to an international arbitration in the matter.
