As the northeast monsoon for this year begins, the Water Resource Department would be all set and done with constructing the Thervoy Kandigai Kannan Kottai – the 5th reservoir at the Tiruvallur district. This shall be of help in storing water in the city.

This project is set to link Thervoy Kandigai and Kannankottai. This is to have a storage capacity of about 1,000 million cubic feet of water. For this project, there were many hindrances pertaining to land acquisition.

Works for the same is taking place in full swing since past December. The works aer taking place close to earthen bund near 2km from Kannankottai. A bund at this particular stretch is really crucial as it will be helpful in storing water, say WRD officials.

Earthen bund

Officials say, the earthen bund is getting developed at about 6 metres below ground level. It will have height of about 9m to 13m above ground level.

So far, 5m of the work is done. further, works for building a weir are going on. This is nothing but a structure that will auto-alert when there is excessive water supply, and it will cause automatic water flow without causing any damage to the bund. There are also going to be sluice gates to help in water irrigation to about 670 acre land area spread across both the villages.

As the basic works get over, water storage will begin, say officials. This is to be remembered as one of the ambitious projects of former Chief Minister J Jayalalitha.

The total project estimate is Rs 380 crore of which about Rs 160 crore is spent for compensating the land owners. Currently, the works for providing interest towards 840 landowners spread in 6 villages including Senjiagaram, Karadiputur, Tamaraikuppam, etc. are being carried out.

There is also going to be a diversion road to Palavakkam and Madharpakkkam both of which are set to get opened for traffic by month end.

The works going on to link the surplus course with Pazhaverkadu are taking place in full swing. In addition, the WRD has also got plans for finishing construction works to intake the tower by end of the month for drawing water.
