In Chennai, today some localities to get rains in the evening

The news that has come out now is on Thursday few localities belonging to the city of Chennai would continue to witness thunderstorm activity in the evening or night time. On Wednesday evening, places like Kolathur, Perambur and Chintadripet received brief spell of rains is known.

The rains in Chennai city would be due to westerlies and due to north westerlies and this has been confirmed by the meteorological department. In Nungambakkam, the maximum temperature recorded was 38 degrees and in Menambakkam the maximum temperature recorded was 37 .2 degrees on Wednesday.  

Thunderstorm activity in the evening was triggered by the intense heat in the day time. Even on Thursday also the same weather pattern would continue and this was as per the officials belonging to the meteorological department. This season, Chennai received 260 mm of rainfall and inspite of this the lakes have been dry.

The department of meteorology has mentioned that the rainfall received by Chennai in this season is 12 percent more than the average of 233 mm rainfall for this season. Meenambakkam recorded 13 mm rainfall and Nungambakkam received marginal 1.4 mm rainfall on Wednesday.

Last week, many districts in Western Ghats got heavy rainfall and it is now said that on Thursday these places would get moderate rainfall. Information gathered is one or two places in Coimbatore and Nilgiris are likely to get very heavy rains today and on Friday it might reduce to heavy rainfall.

Till Friday, parts of south TN and interior parts of TN are likely to get light to moderate rainfall and this was as per Mr. Puviarasan, director Area Cyclone Warning Centre. He added that from Saturday onwards, the convective rainfall activity might increase and about 50% of districts might get scattered rainfall from Saturday. It must be taken into account that rainfall might decrease over the districts along the Western Ghats from Saturday.
