Library in a hospital!! Sound’s incredible isn’t it!!
People hesitate to go to the libraries these days but a library in the government hospital is making great news now. The maternity ward in the government hospital in Ponneri is different and is not the usual one with anxious mothers, new born babies etc. This ward has got library of more than 500 books.
The credit for this library at the maternity ward must go to Dr. Anurathna, chief medical officer. She spoke about how the hospital hss got 104 beds and how the women admitted for delivery stay for nearly 10 days. There are also other inpatients here. She added that most patients do not know how to spend their time and they fiddle with their mobile phones.
It was around two years ago Dr. Anurathna took a decision to start a library for the admitted patients. This doctor donated 100 books from her house to this library and slowly many started donating books.
It is now brought out that many in-patients who had forgotten the habit of reading books after their school days now borrow books from this library. Once these patients get discharged, they return back the books.
The library has got vast collection of books ranging from Tamil novels to health/family welfare to Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan, many inspirational books on former president Dr. Abdul Kalam, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekanandha etc. It is superb to note that the patients find peace and calm after reading the books and the literary therapy has been able to influence many in a positive way.
The chief medical officer later mentioned that the doctors and nurses of this hospital also borrow books from the library as they have found reduction in their stress levels and change in attitude towards life. Wherever and whenever possible, Dr. Anurathna would promote the reading of books. Amazing!!
