False ceiling falls to the ground at new airport

Around 75 sq. ft. of false ceiling came crashing down in the passenger lounge at the Chennai airport. This is surprising as the terminal has just been opened and one would have expected the ceiling to hold! The ceiling crashed at 1.38 am in the bus lounge which is on the ground floor of the domestic terminal.

‘During Sunday night’s thunderstorm and mild rainfall, a strong gust of wind must have found its way into the enclosed space, possibly because of someone opening a door, and reached the false ceiling boards. It would have created a wind tunneling effect and the light gypsum ceiling tiles would have fallen down’, said S. Aboobacker, Joint General Manager of Civil Engineering at AAI.
