The cost of tomatoes and carrots has gone up above Rs 100 in retail stores in Chennai!!
This was mainly because of continuous rains in Chennai in the last few days. The traders have pointed out that if the rains continue then the prices of vegetables might go up further.
The fewer arrivals at the Koyambedu wholesale market has led to the increase in the prices of vegetables now. This was according to Mr. S. Chandran, president of Koyambedu Vegetables Wholesale Merchants Association. The business has been dull here due to the heavy rains.
He then shed light on how in the normal circumstance around 80 trucks carrying tomatoes would reach Chennai market every day and how now just 40 trucks have reached the market.
A retail trader pointed out that the tomatoes have been sold for Rs 100 in the retail shops in and around Koyambedu. Point is that a box of 12kg tomatoes costs Rs 1000 now.
The cost of tomatoes would increase further in the coming days due to its unavailability. This was according to Mr. M. Thiagarajan, President of Koyambedu Fruit and Flower Sellers Welfare Association. From Rs 60 to Rs 65 per kilo on Sunday, the price of tomatoes shot up to Rs 70 per kilo on Monday.
It is now said that the price of tomatoes would continue to increase drastically until fresh crops come from northern India. There is a heavy competition going on now between the traders to get tomatoes. Many residents have been facing problems due to the high cost of vegetables in the market as they are unable to afford. Mr. S. Chandran later mentioned that the cost of other veggies have also gone up now by Rs 5 to Rs 10. He was of the view that till the rains last the cost of veggies would be high only.
The sales of vegetables at Coimbatore based market have reduced drastically due to festival holidays and rains. He added that the supply of vegetables to the market was not an issue. This Was according to Mr. M. Rajendran, president of Kovai Thyagi Kumaran Anaithu Kaikari Viyabarigal Sangam.
