There are many people living on the banks of River Cauvery. The news now is that a flood alert has been issued now as the Mettur dam is nearing its full capacity.
According to a statement issued by PWD, people living on the banks of River Cauvery and other low lying places might be cautioned to move to safer places. It added that all the precautionary measures might be taken for safety and security of lives and properties. The main purpose of this statement was to alert the authorities belonging to 12 districts in TN.
It is learnt that due to heavy inflow because of NE monsoons the water level in the Mettur dam is likely to reach 120ft anytime soon. Point is that surplus water might be released from the dam through Cauvery River at any moment of time. At 8am in the morning on Monday, the water level in the Mettur dam was at 117.610 feet and inflow was 27600 cusecs.
The people living on the banks of Cauvery River have been advised to shift to safer places. This was according to Salem collector Mr. S. Karmegam. He was busy inspecting the Mettur dam on Monday.
He then mentioned that as the surplus water flows into delta regions the PWD authorities have been informing collectors belonging to 12 districts about the Mettur dam’s water storage to take necessary steps. A close vigil has been maintained by the PWD authorities now on the dam.
The Bhavani Sagar dam is filled completely with water now and people have been barred from washing clothes, bathing etc near River Bhavani. Information collected is that at present 6500 cusecs of water has been released through Bhavani River and 1500 cusecs through canal for LBP or Lower Bhavani Project irrigation. It is known that the total capacity of the dam is 105feet.
