Why Chennai commuters are facing issues in just 2 days of heavy rains?

The heavy rains for the last 2 days in Chennai have not spared the old or newly laid roads!!

All the roads in Chennai were battered and the commuters are now facing trouble and risk on these roads. On important roads like Poonamallee High Road near  Maduravoyal and 100 ft road near Thirumangalam flyover craters have come up now. In south Chennai, many roads in T. Nagar have been damaged badly due to sever inundations.

The situation in the north Chennai was not different and there were craters on the roads like Tiruvottriyur High Road near Old Washermenpet and Tondiarpet. Just recently, a techie lost his life due to a pothole while he was travelling through Mount Road and it grabbed many eyeballs.

The quality of the roads have been questioned by some activists as the roads have been coming off with just a day or two days of rains. The quality of asphalt being used to lay roads is being questioned by many.

Mr. David Manohar, a civic activist expressed his thoughts and spoke about how the contractors do not mill the roads properly and they do not know where to dispose of the milled out asphalt. The roads have been laid overnight and the contractors leave the place before sunrise. Point is that the roads must be milled properly before they get laid.

Insufficient asphalt content is another issue that has been making the roads to come off easily now. The asphalt chips bounce back due to heavy rains and if the tar content is not sufficient then the roads get opened up easily. Bitter fact is that in many localities in Chennai, proper milling is not done despite of a Government Order or GO in place. The heavy rains in the last 2 days have also damaged many interior roads and streets apart the exterior roads.

There are massive craters on the roads in Shanthi Colony and in Tiruvallur Salai and on Padi Road in Mogappair. The situation is same in other important localities like Purasawakkam and Mambalam etc. It was brought out by an official that in the first week of November GCC had sanctioned Rs 10 lakhs across 15 zones to patch up craters and potholes. He added that close to 6000 roads were identified for this purpose but heavy rains had interrupted the work. Finally, the official mentioned that the patch up work would be start by next week.
