The reading skills of the students have been poor and not up to the mark in many government schools are known. To overcome this problem, the government as well as the government aided schools in the state of Tamil Nadu would have a new period particularly for reading purposes of the students. To make the students know the current affairs, regular newspaper reading habits would be provided by the school education department.

Majority of the students have not been utilizing the libraries that are available in the government schools. This was according to some authorities. It was found that just a few students make use of these libraries present in the schools. It was revealed by a senior officer belonging to the school education department that just 10% of the students go to the libraries to read books.

The schools have reopened again now after many months. It was noticed by the teachers that the students have lost interest in reading books. As a result of this, the vocabulary of the students has become poor. For procuring additional books for the school libraries, the TN government has allotted an amount of Rs 30.18 crores.

It is superb to mention that in the new reading period in the government schools the teachers would be guiding the students and help them to come out with good pronunciation. Point to be noted is that every student would be encouraged by the teachers to borrow books from the school libraries and the students would be allowed to take these books to their homes for reading.

The senior officer belonging to the school education department later pointed out that the number of reading periods in the schools would be increased gradually. He hinted that apart from the reading periods the students would be encouraged to read newspapers to keep themselves updated regarding current affairs.
