In the future, if you visit the Koyambedu wholesale fruit and vegetable market, then don’t be surprised if you come across boom barriers, GPS facilities, parking lots etc here!!

Quarter of a century has passed since the Wholesale fruit and vegetable market at Koyambedu in Chennai was started. Time has now come for a complete change in this market.

The amazing news is that this market will be revamped soon. The CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has envisaged a superb plan and as per the plan there would be a separate organic facility with certified products plus cold storage facilities, night shelters and go-downs etc in the Koyambedu market. An amount of Rs 20 crores would be spent for this purpose.

This market in Chennai would have state of art parking lots, integrated SWM systems, greenery and better toilet facilities etc. It is now expected that these changes would increase revenue.

It must be remembered that Koyambedu market was started in the year 1996 on 65 acres of land and it has got nearly 4000 shops. The annual income from this market every year is Rs 10 crores but Rs 12 crore a day is being spent for up-keeping the market.  This market receives about 6000 tonnes of goods daily and produces 200 tonnes of garbage.

Information is that the garbage generated is neither treated nor composted but just dumped on the premises. Transferring this garbage to landfill costs Rs 50 lakh every month. Till now, no action has been taken against the dumping of vegetable wastes on the premises.
