With the revised charges for electric power consumption in effect now, TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company) has been sending Short Message Service (SMS) to consumers who are residents in multi-storeyed apartments.

The Electricity Regulation Committee had approved the charges revising proposal from TANGEDCO.

Subsequently, the upwardly revised power consumption charges came into effect on 10th September. In this regard, TANGEDCO has made certain streamlining changes in the slots for calculating power consumption charges.

The type of power connection has been sorted first before fixing the charges as per the revised system. Residents of multi-storeyed apartments use motors for water and other requirements.

This consumption has been brought under common public use. Earlier, it was considered domestic use.

It is worth noting here that generally, the power connections for common consumption are charged higher than the individual house power consumption. Presently, this common consumption is categorized under 1D.

As per this, the different section number is given to different types of power connections. 1A is for a house or domestic consumption. 1c is for the bulk consumption of electricity by factories, and industries.

1d is for the common consumption of electric power. 2A is for the water distribution and street lights. 2B(1) is for the government and government-related educational institutes.

Type 2B(2) is for private academic institutes. 2C is for worshipping spots such as temples, churches and mosques. 3A(1) is for cotton-growing, small-scale enterprises, 3A(20 is for handlooms, and 5 is for commercial use. 1B is for huts and hutments. 4 is for agriculture.

So, TANGEDCO has been sending SMS to the different types of consumers clarifying the various categories as above and which connection belongs to which category. As such, consumers need to pay as per the rates fixed for different categories!
