Latest important details about the road widening work on the Chennai - Bengaluru highway!!

The Union minister for road transport and Highways Mr. Nitin Gadkari mentioned that the road widening work on the stretch of Sriperumbudur - Walajapet into a 6 lane on the Chennai - Bengaluru Highway has been progressing slowly only. Under 3 packages, the road widening work from Maduravoyal to Walajahpet section into 6 lanes was taken up on the NH-48. This was the answer given by Mr. Nitin Gadkari to a question from Mr. KRN. Rajesh Kumar MP Rajya Sabha.

As per the schedule the works from Maduravoyal to Sriperumbudur has been going on but the works from Sriperumbudur to Karaipettai and from Karaipettai to Walajapet have been facing setbacks.

The widening of road from Maduravoyal - Sriperumbudur would have to be completed on 13th February 2023 but just 55% of the road wideninG works have been completed in this section till now. This was according to Mr. Nitin Gadkari. Oinly 35.62% of road widening works have been completed from Sriperumbudur to karaipettai now. It is scheduled to be completed by 31st March 2024. It is learnt that just545 of the road widening work has been completed till now on the Karapettai - Walajahpet stretch and the deadline for that is December 2023.

The shortage of earth for the construction of approaches for the vehicular underpass has been cited as the reason for the delay or slow progression of the road widening works here, This was according to some sources from the National Highways department.  The National Highway wing belonging to the state Highways department has taken up the road widening works on the Maduravoyal - Sriperumbudur stretch. 

Point to be noted is that it has only 4 vehicular underpasses.The sources have brought out that the Sriperumbudur - Karaipettai and Karaipettai - Walajahpet have 33 vehicular underpasses and flyovers. Therefore, large volumes of borrow earth would be required.
