The superb news is that CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has decided to prepare a sustainable strategic growth economic plan for CMA or Chennai Metropolitan Area. This would make Chennai into a top global city in terms of economic development. It is noteworthy that directions would be stipulated in the economic plan from CMDA for efficient land use with optimal space distribution.
New growth centres would be identified and locations for proposed projects would be indicated. This was according to the document from CMDA. There are 22 SEZs or special economic zones (out of the total 40 SEZs) in CMA.
Point to be noted is that currently core Chennai city retains port activity (MPT and Chennai harbour) etc. and it also houses secretariat plus few important services. In places like Oragadam, Sriperumbudur etc, manufacturing industries have developed and IT services have developed in clusters spread across the IT corridor along OMR, Tidel Parks in Siruseri etc.
Various things that would be studied while preparing the plan are the present local economic development climate of CMA, macro-environmental factors affecting CMA, current regulatory framework, investment incentives etc.
