The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is outsourcing solid waste management and litter control at Marina and Besant Nagar beaches, following recent privatization of waste management in Royapuram and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar. Tenders for beach waste management will be combined with those for Zones 5 and 6. The GCC plans to expedite this process and deploy heavy-duty mechanical sweepers for beach cleanup, according to GCC commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran.
Additionally, three All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) have been introduced to monitor garbage dumping and encroachments at these beaches. Private contractors currently manage waste collection, transportation, and disposal in 10 of the city`s 15 zones. This move aims to enhance waste management, reduce litter, and improve public health. The GCC will oversee contractor performance to ensure compliance with standards. Chennai generates over 6,000 MT of waste daily.
