IIT-M’s tool to control accidents

Posted on: 09/Oct/2014 4:38:56 PM
The state transport corporation points the main reason behind more number of accidents in the city to driver fatigue. As a step to bring it under control, IIT-Madras has come up with a tool to help detect fatigue behind the wheel.

This tool was developed by IIT-Madras in the early days of this year. The government has now come forward to bring it to use on road. Speaking to an official from the Institute for Road Transport (RTI), he says the department is looking to make use of the tool and test on 50 MTC bus drivers. A schedule will soon be drawn and the system will be installed, he added.

How does it work?
It functions by having a tab on the brain activity, body pressure distribution and muscle grip. The system will have ECG and EEG which will keep on monitoring the driver’s brain activity, says a professor who worked in the project.  The sensor will be placed either on steering wheel or seat. Travelling through monotonous routes amidst punishing work schedules brings stress and makes drivers fall fatigue.  The challenge to be fought is on how the system is brought from lab to use on roads, says the professor.
