STUDENTS’ SPECIALS IN CHENNAI CITY SOON

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation is planning to operate city buses especially for Students shortly in Chennai city. The buses will be exclusively for students commuting to schools and colleges.
It will be operated on the same lines that ladies specials. It is estimated that more than 3.25 lakh students commute by city buses daily.
There are about 200 ladies specials running as of now. MTC is preparing a study paper on the possible routes to be operated. About one hundred routes which pass through schools have been identified. MTC has been given time till October 20th to submit detailed proposal to the government. ‘Locality-specific plans` is expected to be evolved and need based strategies adopted. The MTC has already written to all the 1740 schools in the city about this plan. Out of which 756 schools have responded; 80% of which start in the morning at 08.30 Hrs.
The Government must delve more deeply into this, keeping in mind the timings of different segments such as Engineering colleges, offices, Arts&science colleges, Schools and normal office timings. Fundamentally as we grow in population, day by day month on month there is addition to number of people, vehicles movement on the roads. What we have look at strategically is the kind of road which can take more load of traffic, laterally.
