The recent earthquake in Nepal has taken thousands of lives.

Historically, Tamil Nadu has not experienced a major disaster of earthquake so far. However, experts say that Tamil Nadu is not so safe from earthquakes.

Earthquakes are divided into 5 categories.

5th level causes the maximum damage.

Tamil Nadu comes under the 3rd level earthquake. As per this, Tamil Nadu has the possibility of experiencing earthquake of the magnitude of 6 Richter.

Experts warn that this kind of earthquake will cause havoc and destroy major cities like Chennai,, Coimbatore, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Tanjore, and Puducherry.

Chennai has several old buildings of historical importance.

Experts opine that these buildings may not withstand an earthquake of 6 Richter. Hence, Chennai does have the prospects of great disaster.

There are a lot of sky-scrapers (tall buildings) in Chennai now. It is suspected that these buildings may not withstand the attack of earthquake.

Experts predict that in the event of a 6 Richter earthquake, the buildings on the banks of Adyar river will be the most affected. This is because the soil in this area is soft. Similarly, the buildings near the sea-shore also may not withstand earthquake.
