The World Bank aided project to rework the storm drains in the city have been kicked off by the Chennai Corporation. Tenders have started floating regarding the first phase of the project.
The exercise is said to be the Corporation’s most expensive one till date. Rs. 4,034 crore has been set aside to build drains and canals which will stretch 329.18 kms. The water from these drains will ultimately reach the Bay of Bengal but not before flowing through one of the four river basins in the city - Kosasthalaiyar, Kovalam, Cooum and Adyar.
Families that live by the banks of canals of Padi Kuppam, Nolambur, Ambattur Industrial Estate, Nandambakkam and Arumbakkam will be resettled in tenements provided by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.
‘The World Bank has instructed that plans of rehabilitation and evictions should be finalised before any work begins... The families affected due to the project will not be left in the lurch’, said a senior corporation official.
