Passengers in train will no more wind pantry cars or food vendors at the railway station as these are set to turn obsolete soon. The railways has plans to introduce e-catering that will allow passengers to place their food orders online and get them delivered to their berths on time.
This facility is titled Food on Tracks and this will be made available at 45 stations. This list of 45 is inclusive of Chennai central, and Madurai in southern railway. Commuters who are willing to pay premium price may also order burger, muffin, rotis, curries, among other dishes. This facility was launched in trains without pantry cars in September. This facility is expanded to many other trains that begin the journey from select stations. The food order can be placed online or from a call center. According to one of the senior officials at the railways, use of pantry cars is already reduced and they have started focusing on getting food at enroute stations. Pantry cars are being replaced so that more passenger coaches can be included in trains. Furthermore, running pantry cars is also costly.
