Possible illnesses due to rain and their symptoms

Chennai is on high alert for epidemic outbreaks. There has been a sharp rise in skin related diseases in relief camps. This may be due to the stagnant sewage water that is in several parts of the city. Here are a few diseases and their symptoms. If you or your loved ones show signs of any of these, please visit your doctor at once. 

Leptospirosis is caused by urine of rodents in the water or soil. The bacteria gets into the system through open sits and wounds. The disease can cause liver and kidney related problems and may lead to death. Symptoms include:
  • High fever
  • sudden headaches
  • nausea and vomiting
  • loss of appetite
  • muscle pain, particularly in the lower back and calves
Web space infection occurs in those who are exposed to sewage water. The webbing of the feet and hands get infected. Symptoms are:
  • Reddish brown or red rashes
  • itchy or oozing skin
  • foul smell
  • cracked skin
At the moment, areas that have a high risk of this infection are Mudichur, Tambaram, Vandalur, Virugambakkam, Vadapalani and Ramavaram. 

Cholera is a water borne disease. Symptoms are:
  • rapid heart rate
  • loss of elasticity of the skin
  • dry mucous membranes
  • thirst
  • muscle cramps
  • low blood pressure

Adyar and Saidapet are at high risk for cholera

Diarrhoea is predominant in children. It is a bacterial borne infection that is caused by intake of bad food or water. Symptoms are having frequent, loose and watery stools. High risk areas in the city are Chemmachery, Thoraipakkam, Jafferkhanpet, Saidapet, Shenoy Nagar, Maduravoyal, Villivakkam, Sidco Nagar, Kattankalathur, Thirokazhakundram, Manali, Medavakkam and K. K. Nagar. 

Malaria is a mosquito borne disease. Symptoms are:
  • Shaking chills
  • Moderate to severe fever
  • Profuse sweating
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Anaemia
High risk areas are Porur and Valasaravakkam.
