Heavy rain and strong wind Chennai

Heavy rain battered  Chennai on Monday, disrupting normal life for a few hours in the evening. Accompanied by strong winds, the rain uprooted a large number of flex boards and advertisement banners in several parts of the town. 

The sudden thunderstorm that struck the city around 7.30pm on Monday wreaked havoc, bringing traffic to a halt in several areas, flooding arterial roands and closing up subways.

The Meteorological Department in Nungambakkam registered 70.2 mm of rainfall during the 12-hour period ending 8.30 p.m. This is much mor e than the monthly average of 53.7 mm. Meenambakkam recorded 46 mm of rainfall during the same period. 

Corporation officials said trees were uprooted in several areas, including Ramnagar in Velachery, Panchaliamman Koil Street in Arumbakkam, Mukund Garden Road in Chetpet and outside the Semmozhi Poonga on Cathedral Road. Commuters also reported a couple of tree-falls in Royapuram and one in Gopalapuram.
