New boating and sport fishing facilities at the restored Chetpet Lake was recently inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Huge crowd are flocking to this lake. On Sunday, March 6th it collected Rs 1.75 Lakhs.
An average Chetpet Eco Park draws 600 to 700 visitors on weekdays. The number swells on weekends to 2,500 on Saturday and 3,500 on Sunday.
Boating has the highest demand. Most visitors prefer to take the pedal boats. Nearly 400 visitors take boat rides on weekdays while between 600 and 800 do so on weekends.
Visitors pay a fee of 50 for adults and 25 for children for a boat ride of half an hour. Sport fishing is also getting popular at the lake. Twenty-five fishing rods are available for those interested and willing to pay Rs 300. Visitors are each permitted to catch up to three fish.
The eco-park also offers walkers a chance to get some exercise twice a day, in the morning and evening. The park has so far received 263 applications for membership to use the walking/jogging path. One pays 200 per month, 1,000 for six months or 2,000 for a year. Walkers receive identity cards.
