ID proofs which can be shown by voters without voter ID

With the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections scheduled on 16th May, the voters need to show their photographed voter IDs while casting their votes.

The Election Commission has announced that any one of the following list of ID proofs can be shown by the voters without voter ID:
  • Passport
  • Driving Licence
  • Photographed Employee ID cards issued by state and central government institutions
  • Photographed passbooks issued by the banks and Post Offices
  • PAN Card
  • Smart Card issued by RGI under NTR
  • (MGRNREGA) Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act card
  • Smart card issued by the Labour Welfare Department Healathy Life Insurance Smart Card
  • Photographed pension certificate
  • Voters ID with photograph approved by the Election Commission
  • Employee ID cards issued by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and Members of Legislative Assemblies
If the voter’s ID is established by the above, typing and spelling mistakes may be overlooked.

If a voter ID issued by another ward is shown, if the name is found in the original ward voters list, it can be accepted to allow voting.

If the photographs can not establish the identity, the voter can show any of the above-mentioned proofs.

As per the People Representation Law, the foreign residents can be identified only by the original passport. No other document proof will be accepted.
