The Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that the currency notes of Rs.500 and Rs. 1000 would be invalid on 8th November 2016. The public was given time till 31st December to exchange these notes in their possessions. It was announced that the Indians working/settled abroad can exchange the old notes up to 31st March.
It was also announced the maximum amount for the exchange of old notes will be Rs. 25000. Proof has to be given for any amount in excess.
However, a complaint is received that the officials asked for proof from the airport for exchange.
However, the airport authorities refused that being Indians, there was no necessity for any proof. Thus the Indians are put to extreme hardships.
The Indian working abroad have expressed anxiety as the time available is very short - just a week. As no special counters have been set up for this purpose, they complained bitterly about the huge disappointment that they have been waiting for a long time with the old notes without being able to exchange them.
