Quarry water to be purified and distributed in Chennai from 9th June

CMWSSB (Chennai Metro Watrs Supply and Sewerage Board) officials have informed that water from the quarries located near Mangadu will be purified and distributed to the Chennai Metro residents from 9th June. 30 million litres of water will be distributed daily.

The capacity of all the 4 major reservoirs supplying water to Chennai Metro has dwindled to alarmingly low levels. Poondi, Puzhal, Chembarambakkam, and Cholavaram reservoirs have a total capacity of millions of cft have now reduced to 235 million cft. During the corresponding period lats year, the capacity of these 4 reservoirs was 4900 million cft.

As there is an unprecedented and acute drought conditions prevailing in Tamil Nadu, shortage of drinking water was also one of the effects.

The state government took several alternative initiatives such as other water resources. Water was taken from the agricultural ells in Thiruvallur district and distributed to Chennai Metro.

Now, it has been planned to take the water from the quarries, purify and distribute. A research study was undertaken and it was confirmed that it can be used safely as drinking water after purification. Accordingly 3.5 km piping was laid from the quarries to Chemabarambkkam purification plant.

CMWSSB officials informed that water taken from quarries located in Sikkarapuram will be purified and distributed to a section of the city in central and south Chennai from 9th June. 30 million litres will be distributed daily for 100 days.
